A few months couldn’t possibly be a long time, but then why does it feel that way? How can a few months somehow feel like a lifetime?
And I don’t want to romanticise it by saying that a single day can feel like a lifetime in all the right ways with the right person, while years can shrink into what feels like a day when you look back at all the time you spent with the wrong one. But maybe there is some truth to that.
I think it’s the moments that make something feel as long as it does. All the many, many fun things we’ve done, all the places we’ve been, all the memories somehow squeezed into such a short amount of time. At least for me, especially considering how dull my life had become over the past few years. And I had carefully curated it to be that way. Boring was safe. Because every time I wanted to have a little fun, I somehow invited trouble, and trouble had been scorching to my mental health.
But I never stopped wondering about the kind of fun life could be. I lived in the nostalgia of it, missing a version of myself and a life I wasn’t even sure I knew how to return to.
And then I met him.
And it was like meeting everything I’d ever wished for in a person. He brought with him so much of what I had missed, but mostly, he brought back the laughter. Maybe that’s why these few months feel like a lifetime. There have been so many moments where I’ve felt nothing but happy. Days when I was sad and seeing him somehow made most of it disappear. Not always, of course, because let’s be real, none of this is magical. It’s real and human, and it comes with its own set of flaws.
But I swear, meeting him lit a spark in me. One I thought I’d lost somewhere along the way, perhaps with no hope of it ever returning.
I could go on and on about it, but eventually it would start sounding mushy and corny and probably a little cringe because, ew, how is a man making me feel all these wonderful things?
But he is.
And some of the things I feel with him are things I have never experienced in my entire life. Things I genuinely didn’t think existed outside of fiction. The kind of wonderful novels are written about.
So maybe a few months isn’t a lifetime. Maybe it just feels like one when you’ve somehow managed to fit so much living into it.
